Salmon fishing on the Feather River draws anglers from across the region eager to catch these prized fish. The river’s unique environment and seasonal patterns create both opportunities and challenges for fishing enthusiasts. This report offers a clear look at current conditions, effective techniques, and practical tips to help you make the most of your next trip to the Feather River.
October 31st marks the last day for the 2025 Salmon season.

Current Salmon Fishing Conditions on the Feather River
The Feather River has seen steady salmon activity this season, with Chinook salmon from 10-40lbs. Water temperatures have remained within a range favorable for salmon migration, typically between 55 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature range encourages salmon to move upstream, making them more accessible to anglers.
Water flow levels have been moderate, which helps maintain good oxygen levels and clear water, improving visibility for both fish and fishermen. However, recent rainfall has caused some fluctuations, so it’s important to check daily flow reports before heading out.
The best fishing spots have included areas near the Thermalito outlet and the lower river sections close to the Oroville wildlife area. These locations offer a mix of deep pools and riffles where salmon tend to rest.
Hwy 99 bridge, star bend, sunset pumps and the yuba city bridge has been producing quality fish. Overall, the entire river sections open to salmon fishing has been consistently producing salmon throughout the season which has kept the river not feeling crowded at all.

Best Times to Fish for Salmon on the Feather River
Timing plays a crucial role in salmon fishing success. Early morning and late afternoon are generally the most productive times. During these periods, salmon are more active and likely to bite.
Seasonally, the peak runs occur from late August through October. During this window, salmon move upstream to spawn, increasing their presence in the river. Anglers should plan trips around these months to maximize their chances.
Weather also affects salmon behavior. Overcast days with light rain often lead to better fishing conditions, as salmon feel less exposed and more active.
Effective Techniques for Catching Feather River Salmon
Several fishing methods work well on the Feather River, but some stand out for their effectiveness:
Drift Fishing: Fishing with Roe using techniques that drift naturally with the current allows you to cover more water and present your offering in a lifelike manner. Drift fishing with roe or artificial salmon eggs is popular.
Float Fishing: This technique involves suspending bait under a float or bobber. It keeps the bait at the desired depth and makes it easier to detect bites.
Casting with Lures: Spinners and spoons that mimic small fish or can provoke strikes. Vary your retrieval speed to find what triggers the salmon.
Plugs: For those with a boat, plugs are highly effective for salmon. Plugs can be trolled against the current, hovered or back bounced down river. Color, size and speed all play a factor on getting a salmon to bite.
Recommended Gear and Bait for Feather River Salmon
Choosing the right gear improves your chances and makes fishing more enjoyable. Here are some recommendations:
Rod and Reel: A medium to heavy-action rod between 8 and 9 feet paired with a sturdy reel capable of holding 30-50 lb test line works well.
Line: Braided line in the 30-50lb class can provide strength and sensitivity.
Bait: Salmon roe, Plugs and spinners remain the top bait choices. Fresh roe is best, but quality artificial eggs can also work. Plugs wrapped with sardine are a go to bait for many Feather River salmon fishing guides.
Lures: Brightly colored spinners and plugs in silver, pink, orange or chartreuse attract salmon effectively.
Terminal Tackle: Use cannon ball sinkers or split shot slinky weights to keep bait near the bottom, and sharp hooks to improve catch rates.
Safety and Conservation Tips for Anglers
Respecting the river environment and local regulations ensures sustainable fishing for future seasons. Keep these points in mind:
Follow all fishing regulations, including size and bag limits.
Use barbless hooks or circle hooks to minimize injury to fish if practicing catch and release.
Avoid fishing in restricted areas or during closed seasons.
Pack out all trash and fishing line to protect wildlife.
Be cautious of slippery rocks and fast currents to stay safe.
Feather River Salmon Fishing Forecast For 2026
Based on the very high number of jacks returning to the central valley rivers we should see a longer season with less restrictions and higher bag limits in 2026. The Sacramento River should be open as
well. Even though the Sac was closed to salmon in 2025, the river received a solid return, and all hatchery quotas were met with high jack counts as well.
The Feather River offers excellent salmon fishing opportunities when you understand the river’s rhythms and use the right techniques. Staying informed about current conditions, choosing effective gear, and respecting conservation rules will help you enjoy a successful outing.
Plan your trip around peak salmon runs, focus on productive fishing spots, and try different methods to see what works best. With patience and preparation, you can bring home a memorable catch from this rewarding river.
